Wildlife-Friendly Highway: 11 Animal Passages Planned in ₹758 Crore Project in MP

New Delhi: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has announced the approval of a ₹758 crore highway project in Madhya Pradesh aimed at improving connectivity, road safety, and wildlife protection.

The project involves the four-laning of a 22-km stretch in the Itarsi–Betul section of National Highway 46, which passes through a critical tiger corridor. The region is known for its strong agricultural base and abundant natural resources, including coal, copper, graphite, and lead-zinc.

According to the minister, the widening of this stretch will significantly reduce travel time for goods transportation across the region while improving road safety. It is also expected to enhance accessibility for farmers travelling to markets and mandis, thereby supporting local economic activity.

To ensure protection of wildlife in the area, the project includes the construction of 11 dedicated animal underpasses and overpasses. These structures are aimed at facilitating safe animal movement across the highway, reducing the risk of accidents and wildlife fatalities.

With the completion of this 22-km stretch, the entire Gwalior–Betul corridor will be upgraded to a four-lane highway. The development is expected to improve connectivity through hilly terrain, enhance travel efficiency, and boost eco-tourism in key destinations such as Madhav National Park, Ratapani Wildlife Sanctuary, and the Satpura Tiger Reserve.
