India’s Largest Hydro Project Advances as NHPC Starts Unit-4 Commissioning

Arunachal Pradesh: In a significant milestone, the wet commissioning of Unit-4 (250 MW) of the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project commenced on March 31, 2026, with the successful mechanical run of the machine. This marks the beginning of the commissioning of the fourth unit of the country’s largest hydropower project.

With the commencement of wet commissioning of Unit-4, the process of synchronisation with the national grid has begun. The remaining four units, each of 250 MW, will be commissioned in a phased manner. Upon completion, the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (8 × 250 MW) will stand as India’s largest hydroelectric project.

On the occasion, Bhupender Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of NHPC Limited, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Ministry of Power, Government of India; the governments of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam; former NHPC leadership; the Subansiri team; executing agencies; project partners; and all stakeholders. He described the achievement as a testament to NHPC’s engineering excellence and a major step towards India’s clean, green, and self-reliant energy vision.

He also commended the Subansiri team, led by Rajendra Prasad, Executive Director and Head of Project, and encouraged continued commitment to the timely commissioning of the remaining units. DeshBharat
