New Delhi: Indian Railways has taken a major passenger-friendly step by introducing a dedicated ‘pet box’ facility in Sleeper Vande Bharat Express trains, making it easier for pet owners to travel with their beloved animals on long-distance journeys.

For years, pet owners have faced difficulties while travelling for a few days, often forced to leave their pets at crèches or boarding centres that can cost ₹1,500 to ₹2,500 per day, with no guarantee of proper care. While existing rules allow pets to be carried in the brake van of long-distance trains, owners are unable to see their animals during the journey, which often causes stress to both pets and passengers.

Keeping these concerns in mind, Indian Railways has now made a special arrangement in the Sleeper Vande Bharat Express. Unlike conventional trains where animals are kept in the brake van at the rear, the new trains will have ‘pet boxes’ installed in the Driving Trailer Coaches (DTCs), located just behind the loco pilot’s cabin. This ensures better safety, ventilation, and monitoring during travel.

According to the Railways’ Commercial Department, separate bookings must be made through the Railway parcel office to avail of the pet box facility. Passengers will be required to pay a prescribed charge for transporting pets.

Strict health and safety norms have also been laid down. Pet owners must obtain a fitness certificate from a registered veterinarian 24 to 48 hours before the journey. The certificate must clearly state that the animal is free from any contagious disease and include valid vaccination details.

Railway officials said the new facility reflects a decade of progress in passenger-centric services and is aimed at reducing stress for pets while offering peace of mind to their owners. The move is expected to benefit thousands of pet lovers who travel long distances and have so far struggled to find safe and reliable options for their animals.

With modern amenities and now pet-friendly travel options, the Sleeper Vande Bharat Express is being positioned as a new benchmark in comfortable and inclusive rail travel in India.
