North Western Railway to Double Maintenance Capacity with 20 New Pit Lines; Path Cleared for New Train Services
April 07, 2026
Jaipur: In a major move to bolster rail operations, North Western Railway (NWR) has commenced the construction of 20 new pit lines across the zone. This strategic expansion is set to double the existing maintenance capacity, which is currently supported by 22 pit lines used for primary train maintenance.
Strengthening the Maintenance Network
The development of these new lines is essential for the future of rail travel in the region, as mandatory maintenance is required for every train before it can be operated. By strengthening the maintenance infrastructure, the railway aims to not only improve the efficiency of current operations but also clear the way for the introduction of new train services.
The new pit lines will be distributed across several key locations:
- Khatipura: 4 lines
- Lalgarh: 4 lines
- Umra, Shri Ganganagar, Hisar, and Suratgarh: 2 lines each
- Madar and Barmer: 1 line each
Mission Mode Implementation
To ensure the projects are finished on schedule, the railway has adopted a “mission mode” approach. Progress is being monitored at the highest levels to guarantee that the infrastructure is ready to meet increasing demands.
Benefits for Passengers
According to Amit Sudarshan, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the zone, the completion of these 20 pit lines will significantly speed up train operations. Beyond doubling maintenance capacity, the project is expected to provide better connectivity and improved facilities for passengers, while providing a substantial boost to the region’s overall rail infrastructure.
