Char Dham Route to Get Safer as ₹461 Crore Landslide Works Approved
April 07, 2026
New Delhi: The Union Government has approved projects worth ₹461 crore for landslide mitigation and repair works at 20 vulnerable locations in Uttarakhand, aimed at improving road safety and ensuring uninterrupted connectivity in hilly regions.
Out of the total allocation, ₹233 crore has been sanctioned for treatment of 17 landslide-prone sites along National Highway 134 in Uttarkashi district. Additionally, ₹228 crore has been approved for mitigation measures at three vulnerable locations on the Tawaghat–Ghatiabagar stretch of National Highway 9 in Pithoragarh district.
NH-134 is a key route of the Char Dham Yatra, connecting Dharasu and Kuthnaur to Yamunotri Dham. The stretch is highly susceptible to landslides, often leading to road blockages, traffic disruptions, and safety risks for commuters. Officials said the proposed mitigation and repair works will help prevent future damage and ensure safer travel for pilgrims, tourists, and local residents.
Similarly, the planned interventions on NH-9 are expected to enhance safety for travellers, including tourists and locals, while ensuring seamless connectivity to remote and border areas in the region.
The projects are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen road infrastructure in landslide-prone Himalayan regions, with a focus on safety, resilience, and reliable access. DeshBharat
