Virar – Dahanu Road Corridor Upgrade Advances as Station Prepares for Longer Trains
April 06, 2026
Mumbai: Platform extension works at Virar railway station under Western Railway have been completed, enabling 15-coach local trains to halt at the station with ease.
As part of the upgrade, the width of Platforms 3A and 4A has been increased by four metres. The project was executed by the Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation within just four months. Additionally, a new “home platform”, designated as Platform 5A, has been constructed on the western side of the station to streamline the arrival and departure of suburban services.
Officials said 15-coach local train services are expected to commence shortly, adding that all newly developed platforms will soon be handed over to Western Railway.
Major upgrades on Virar–Dahanu corridor
Extensive development work is currently underway at Virar station as part of the Virar–Dahanu Road four-line project. The initiative aims to cater to the anticipated rise in passenger traffic, improve commuter amenities, and meet the growing demand for suburban rail services.
According to officials, the completion of these works will significantly strengthen rail infrastructure along the Virar–Dahanu Road section while enhancing passenger convenience. A successful trial run of a 15-coach local train was recently conducted through coordinated efforts between Western Railway and MRVC.
“This capacity enhancement project at Virar station is of immense importance for the entire section. The work has been carried out through close coordination between MRVC and Western Railway, ensuring passenger safety and minimal disruption to operations,” said Vilas Wadekar, Chairman and Managing Director, MRVC.
