NHAI Plans 120-km Four-Lane Highway Upgrade to Improve Coimbatore–Karnataka Connectivity

Coimbatore: Travel between Coimbatore and the Karnataka border is set to become smoother and faster as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated a major project to upgrade a key stretch of NH-948 into a high-speed four-lane highway.

The proposed project covers a 120-kilometre stretch from the Tamil Nadu–Karnataka border to Coimbatore. The widening work aims to improve regional connectivity, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance travel efficiency for both commuters and commercial vehicles.

Consultancy services invited

NHAI has invited consultancy services through International Competitive Bidding for preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR). The selected consultant will assess the technical and financial feasibility of the project and prepare designs for modern pavement structures, bridges, and improved road safety infrastructure.

Focus on safety and sustainability

According to the tender document, the planning phase will also include several additional components to ensure long-term safety and environmental compliance, including:

  • Environmental impact assessment to minimise damage to the local ecology
  • Provision for toll plazas, bus shelters, and truck lay-bys
  • Road safety audits at multiple stages of project design
  • Planning for future traffic growth and service improvements

Key dates for bidders

The last date for submission of proposals is April 27, 2026, till 11:00 AM, while the bids will be opened on April 28, 2026, at 11:30 AM. All participating firms and their key experts must be registered on the INFRACON portal, as the registration is mandatory for taking part in the bidding process.

The proposed highway upgrade is expected to significantly strengthen road connectivity between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, benefiting trade, tourism, and daily commuters across the region. DeshBharat
