Greenfield airport at Doloo near Silchar gets site clearance, next approval stage underway

New Delhi: The Central Government has granted site clearance for the proposed greenfield airport at Doloo in Cachar district near Silchar, and the project has now moved to the next stage, with the Steering Committee on Greenfield Airports recommending in-principle approval, the Ministry of Civil Aviation informed the Rajya Sabha on March 9, 2026.

Replying to a question, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said that the Ministry of Civil Aviation had earlier granted site clearance under the Greenfield Airports Policy to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for setting up the airport at Doloo in Assam’s Barak Valley region.

He informed that the Airports Authority of India submitted an application seeking in-principle approval along with the Detailed Project Report (DPR) in November 2025, and the Steering Committee on Greenfield Airports, in its February 2026 meeting, recommended granting in-principle approval for the project.

The minister stated that under the Greenfield Airports Policy, the responsibility for implementation of such projects, including land acquisition, rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R), funding arrangements, and environmental and statutory clearances, lies with the airport developer concerned or the respective State Government.

He added that no fixed timeline can be given at this stage, as the completion of airport projects depends on several factors such as availability of land, mandatory clearances, and financial closure.

The proposed airport at Doloo is considered important for improving air connectivity and supporting economic and strategic development in the Barak Valley region of Assam, particularly for Silchar and surrounding districts. DeshBharat
