Kalipahari Bypass Line Approved to Cut 90-Minute Delays in Asansol Rail Operations
February 26, 2026
Kolkata: In a strategic intervention to eliminate operational bottlenecks in eastern India, Indian Railways has sanctioned ₹107.10 crore for constructing a 4.75-km Kalipahari Bypass Line under Eastern Railway in West Bengal.
Currently, trains moving between South Eastern Railway and Eastern Railway are required to enter the busy Asansol Yard for engine reversal, causing congestion and avoidable detention. The proposed bypass will provide direct connectivity between the two railway zones, eliminating the need for reversal at Asansol.
The project is expected to save nearly 90 minutes of detention time for around nine freight trains daily, while approximately eight passenger trains will benefit from time savings of about 30 minutes each.
By easing yard congestion and improving traffic flow, the bypass line will enhance line capacity, reduce turnaround times and improve overall operational efficiency in one of eastern India’s most critical railway junctions.
With this approval, Indian Railways continues its focused investment in capacity enhancement, decongestion and infrastructure modernisation across key corridors nationwide. DeshBharat
