Mulapeta Port gears up for April trial run; 75% of construction completed

Srikakulam: The development of Mulapeta Port in Andhra Pradesh has reached a major milestone, with nearly 75 per cent of the construction work completed. The state government is fast-tracking the project and is aiming to conduct a trial run in April this year.

Project Progress and Oversight

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is personally monitoring the project’s progress and conducting monthly review meetings to ensure timely completion. While three-fourths of the work has been completed, the remaining 25 per cent is scheduled to be finished by November.

Mulapeta Port is expected to emerge as a key maritime hub for North Andhra. The government is simultaneously accelerating work on other strategic infrastructure projects, including the Machilipatnam port.

Investment and Infrastructure Details

The first phase of the Mulapeta Port project involves an investment of ₹4,361 crore and spans approximately 1,500 acres. Of the ₹2,981 crore earmarked for internal infrastructure, around ₹1,887 crore has already been utilised.

Significant technical progress has been achieved:

  • Breakwaters: Approximately 32 lakh tonnes of rock have been used for constructing the breakwaters to ensure structural durability. The south breakwater extends 2,450 metres, while the north breakwater measures 580 metres.

  • Berths: The port will have three general cargo berths, each measuring 270 metres in length and 34 metres in width. Construction of two berths has been completed, while the third is expected to be ready by April. Additionally, a dedicated coal berth is under construction, with about 50 per cent of the work completed.

Connectivity and Utilities

Extensive infrastructure is being developed to integrate the port with major transport networks:

  • Road Connectivity: A 12.85-km road is under construction to link the port with National Highway 16 (Kolkata–Chennai corridor).

  • Rail Connectivity: A 7.8-km rail line is being laid through Santabommali mandal to connect the port to the Chennai–Howrah main railway line for freight movement.

  • Water and Power Supply: A 50-km pipeline is being laid from Gotta Barrage to ensure water supply to the port. Electricity will be provided through the Ravivalasa substation.

In addition to port infrastructure, an industrial cluster is planned in the vicinity, which is expected to further strengthen the region’s economic prospects and boost industrial activity in Andhra Pradesh. DeshBharat
