Khambatki tunnel, bypasses to transform Pune-Kolhapur highway travel
February 19, 2026
Pune, February 18: There is major relief ahead for travellers commuting between Pune and Kolhapur. Following the expansion and modernisation of National Highway-48 (Pune–Bengaluru Highway), the travel time between the two cities is expected to be reduced by nearly half.
At present, the journey takes around five to six hours, but once the project is completed, the distance can be covered in just three hours.
Permanent Solution to Traffic Delays
Currently, commuters face significant delays due to the narrow and winding stretches of the Khambatki Ghat, along with frequent traffic congestion and ongoing construction work in towns such as Satara, Karad and Kagal.
To provide a long-term solution, the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is upgrading this highway into a six-lane corridor.
Key Features of the Project
-
Modern Tunnel: A state-of-the-art tunnel is being constructed at Khambatki Ghat to eliminate dangerous slopes and sharp curves, ensuring safer and faster travel.
-
Bypasses and Flyovers: Bypass roads in Satara and Karad, along with flyovers at major junctions, are being developed to ease congestion.
-
Local Infrastructure: Service roads and underpasses are being built in areas such as Kanegaon, Kini, Shiroli and Ujjwalwadi to facilitate movement for local vehicles and pedestrians.
The ambitious highway modernisation project is expected to be fully completed by 2026, significantly improving regional connectivity and reducing travel time between Pune and Kolhapur. DeshGujarat
