Darbhanga Airport to boost logistics connectivity with a new air cargo terminal

Darbhanga: In a significant move to enhance the regional supply chain and trade infrastructure, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has announced plans to construct a modern domestic air cargo terminal building at Darbhanga Airport. The project, estimated to cost approximately ₹4.55 crore, is designed to provide a dedicated hub for handling domestic goods and materials.

A Modern Infrastructure Hub

The upcoming terminal will be a sophisticated RCC-framed structure. One of its most striking architectural features will be a self-supporting curved metal roof made of 1 mm-thick colour-coated galvalume sheets, designed for durability and superior corrosion resistance.

Inside, the building will be fully equipped with modern amenities, including:

Climate control: Installation of 1.5 TR and 2 TR split air-conditioning units.

Advanced safety: Integrated firefighting and fire alarm systems to ensure the security of stored goods.

Comprehensive facilities: Internal and external electrification, high-tech drainage systems, and a dedicated soak pit.

Timeline for Completion

The construction is slated to be completed within a 10-month period, including a one-month buffer for the rainy season. To ensure the highest standards, the project also incorporates engineering consultancy services for detailed planning, structural design, and seismic considerations.

Boosting Local Trade

This new facility is expected to transform Darbhanga Airport into a vital logistics link for North Bihar, enabling faster and more efficient movement of domestic cargo. The terminal will include specialised storage areas, such as cold storage and a strong room, to safely handle a diverse range of goods.

The bidding process is currently underway, with the AAI seeking eligible contractors to bring this vision to life. Once completed, the domestic air cargo terminal will stand as a cornerstone of Darbhanga’s growing role in India’s aviation and logistics landscape.
